October 22, 2003, Dhaka, 1st Test, 2nd day. Gareth Batty claims his first Test wicket: Alok Kapali, bowled shouldering arms.October 22, 2016, Chittagong, 1st Test, 3rd day. Gareth Batty claims his 12th Test wicket, a week after his 39th birthday. It is now not an impossible thought. On Wednesday evening, Battys phone buzzed with the call from James Whitaker, the national selector, to tell him he was on the plane to Bangladesh and, after a gap of more than 11 years, has the chance to add to his seven Test caps.It was a bit surreal, but a great honour - its a great phonecall to get, he said. Its never going to be a bad one one when youre told youre going to get on a plane to represent your country. Batty was close to a recall this time last year after Zafar Ansari, who he will now be touring alongside after the allrounder was also included in Englands 17-man squad, broke his thumb just hours after earning his first call-up for the trip to the UAE.Instead the selectors went for Samit Patel and the thought was that the last chance for Batty to rekindle his Test career had passed him by. However, another solid season for Surrey, in which he has collected 41 wickets at 31.32, has earned him selection ahead of the more prolific Jack Leach or Ollie Rayner. If Batty does make a final XI, he will be a cricket veteran in the side, if not a Test veteran. It is the gnarled experience which has helped tip the scales in his favour as England try to find a solution - albeit short term - to the challenge of competing in the spin department in Bangladesh and, although the squad has yet to be confirmed, most likely in India as well.Until you get out there you dont know but, certainly in the last few years, I feel I have learnt more about my game and I understand my body and bowled better more consistently, he said. I feel in a good place that, maybe in the younger part of my career, I didnt feel as confident about things, or know exactly what it was going to do, so fingers crossed that stands me in good stead if I get an opportunity..All sport is pressure but as you get older you perhaps know how better to deal with it, but its why we play the game. Its about dealing with pressure and being a good performer under pressure.Although Batty has been brought back because the selectors feel he is one of the best four spinners available, it has also been mooted that he can provide a mentoring role for the other three. England do not have a dedicated spin-bowling coach, even for back-to-back tours of the subcontinent, with Saqlain Mushtaq only scheduled to be involved for a couple of weeks during India. We have not had any conversations about that but, whatever they require from me, I will try to deliver as best I can - anyone within the game knows that about me, he said.As a spinner, our country is not blessed overly with a huge amount of knowledge in that area, so if there is anything I can possibly help with in any way shape or form, I will. But I would do that if I were in an England shirt, a Surrey shirt or just my shirt at the local cricket club.As ever with this tour of Bangladesh, the talk of security is never far away but nothing was going to stop Batty if the call came, even though he has recently become a father for the first time.As soon as the security guys said it was okay, that was good enough. I am not somebody who is going to second-guess somebody whos doing their job, but I totally understand peoples reservations and that is their decision. I spoke to my wife and had a quick word to my little daughter, who gave me a little dribble which I took as meaning it was okay.If Batty returns home having helped England win a Test series, it will be quite a story to tell his daughter in the years to come. NEW YORK -- Four years ago, an unexpected guest crashed a celebration in Manhattan so he could hang out with U.S. Olympians who were on their way to the London Games. The guest: Donald Trump. The president-elect, who also carried the torch in the lead-up to the Athens Games, has been a longtime sports fan and admirer of the Olympics. He also likes winning, which is what has attracted him, over the years, to a U.S. team that routinely dominates the medals. It would be no stretch then to imagine Trump as a natural supporter of the effort to bring the Olympics back to Los Angeles in 2024.But Olympic bidding is a contest decided more by secret handshakes than a scoreboard. Though it claims to be above politics, the International Olympic Committee is teeming with them -- and many of its 98 members factor in geopolitical considerations when deciding which city to entrust with their most sacred and valuable property, the Olympic Games. No surprise then that Trumps election sent a ripple through Los Angeles bid leaders. They recognize that if the United States is viewed as an unsteady player on the global stage when the games are awarded next September, it will give IOC members -- not historically a pro-American group anyway -- one more reason to favor Paris or Budapest over LA.We just finished our presidential election and some of you may question Americas commitment to its founding principles, American sprinter Allyson Felix told IOC members last week at a Los Angeles bid presentation. I have one message for you: Please dont doubt us. Americas diversity is our greatest strength. The U.S. government will not bankroll an LA Olympics, which makes it more of a side player when it comes to bidding. But every bid needs some amount of buy-in from the top, and for a long time, a direct appeal from a head of state was thought to be a key way to bolster a bid. Convinced this was the case, President Barack Obama flew to the IOCs final bid meeting in Copenhagen in 2009 to support Chicago in its attempt to land the 2016 Olympics. He got burned when his home city was the first one eliminated in the voting.Reflecting on that last month, Obama told New York Magazine, I think weve learned that the IOCs decisions are similar to FIFAs decisions: a little bit cooked.ddddddddddddTrump has no apparent baggage with the IOC, and, in fact, an IOC member -- American hockey player Angela Ruggiero -- is one of a handful of Olympians to appear on Trumps reality TV show The Apprentice back in the day. She got fired. But if theres any real fence-mending to be done, it might be between Trump and the LA bid itself.Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, a Democrat with ties to Hillary Clinton, said over the summer that a Trump victory could turn off voters.I think for some of the IOC members, they would say, `Wait a second, can we go to a country like that, where weve heard things that we take offense to? Garcetti said.Trump won, and operatives in the LA bid have had what theyve described as preliminary discussions with the incoming administration. They have not offered details.Assuming Trump doesnt impede LAs progress, the IOC could be faced with a choice between two leaders whose populist, nationalist messages have won over voters, while causing some international discomfort: LAs biggest challenger is Paris, and French polling shows far-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen has a reasonable chance in that countrys election next spring. (Budapest, meanwhile, is considered a long shot.)In considering how much weight to throw behind the Olympic bid, Trump will have to decide which vision of the movement he believes in more. The IOC, after all, has been long been portrayed as an of out-of-touch, privileged group of backroom deal-cutters not all that different from the swamp of overpaid lobbyists and career politicians that Trump said he wants to drain out of Washington. But for a candidate who won by promising to Make America Great Again, the chance to surround himself with a group of red-white-and-blue winners and bring the Summer Games back to U.S. soil for the first time since 1996 might seem like too good an opportunity to turn down.---Follow Eddie Pells on Twitter at https://twitter.com/epells ' ' '
